Ubuntu Opportunistic Programming @Europython: The slides

Posted by Paolo Sammicheli on July 8, 2011

As I previously announced I attended the last Europython as a speaker and I made a presentation about Ubuntu and the Opportunistic Programming. This is the ODP file with slides and the PDF Handout. They also published the video of my english talk, but it’s a little bit weird because for the whole hour the video shows the projected slides and only my shadow on the left. Oh yes, sometimes you can see even my shoulder. 🙂

I hope somebody may find these slides useful and maybe reuse it.

UPDATE: Somebody said that not seeing my face in the video it’s a feature, not a bug. LOL!

Ubuntu Opportunistic Programming @Europython

Posted by Paolo Sammicheli on June 15, 2011

EuroPython is the official European conference about the Python programming language. It is aimed at everyone in the Python community, of all skill levels, both users and programmers. The EuroPython 2011 will be held in the city of Florence, Italy.

The place where I live is very close to Florence so I proposed a talk about Ubuntu and the Opportunistic Programming. My proposal resulted very popular during the voting and they asked me to perform it both in English and Italian. It’s planned for Monday 20 June in English and for Tuesday 21 June in Italian.

During the talk I will talk about Launchpad and Quickly. After the talks I will share with a blogpost the slides and the handout I prepared.

Please wish me good luck! 🙂

Last weekend we hold a conference in the nice town of Fermo, called Ubuntu@Fermo. Andrea Colangelo organized everything in every little detail and the weekend was just perfect.

The event location was a conference center held by the municipality of Fermo and made into a deconsecrated church, really an amazing venue:

During the evening we spoke about the Ubuntu project and how to partecipate, the Ubuntu Women project, the opportunistic development in Ubuntu and the great Andrea Colangelo’s Talk “Debunking Ubuntu myths”.

Thanks to Canonical for the nice gift they sent just in time for the conference and for the Conference Pack:

Really a great conference!

University of Siena continues migrating to Ubuntu

Posted by Paolo Sammicheli on March 17, 2010

The university of Siena (, which is known to be operating since 1240, decided to migrate to Free Software in February 2009. Their decision was motivated by economical and technical aspect and also for fight illegal copies. (more infos, unfortunately just in Italian). The migration was committed to an internal technical group named GNUnisi. They developed an Ubuntu derivate choosing the programs which would fit their needs and started to migrate offices, classes and laboratories. The work went quite smooth during this year and this week they announced the migration of the public reading room “chiesa della rosa”.

This migration is very interesting because, thanks to a project with the municipality of Siena and the Tuscany Region, it will be open also after dinner time, allowing the local Linux User Group and all student’s organization to organize nightly workshops and meetings. Ubuntu-it Weekly Newsletter talked about it last Monday and I would like to share with you this great news in the hope that more universities will start to migrate to Free Software soon.

Here we go! This is my first post on Planet Ubuntu, and it’s also my first post in my new English Blog. Introducing myself: I’m Paolo, from Siena, Italy (yep, in the middle of Tuscany). I’m a member of the Italian LoCo Team where I’m admin of the “Gruppo Promozione”, the Italian version of the International Marketing Team. I’m also a translator and an Italian Website Team member. That’s all for now folks, I will talk more about me in the next posts. I leave you with a photo that I’m very proud of. Just to test photo inclusion on this blog 😉

OK, looks like it’s working good P
